1. The students were shown a Sudoku puzzle and we discussed how it gets solved.
2. The students are shown that only numbers 1-9 are used in the 3x3 grid.
3. Each row and each column must contain the numbers 1-9 without any duplication.
4. In Excel the students color filled a 3x3 grid a light color until the whole 9x9 grid is filled in.
5. The font color remains black and the font size is 16.
6. When the student has completed the puzzle, he/she uses the function key and types in the sum formula for each row and column which must equal 45.
7. Then the whole puzzle is copied and pasted and the student takes out strategic numbers to make the puzzle.
8. Another student tries to solve the puzzle and rates the puzzle as easy, medium, or hard.
9. On Word the students types up a small report about the origins of Sudoku and what did he/she learn from doing the project.

Could you give me the procedures. How you organized this project and your method?

Wow, you could even use this on a smart board or a white board and use a class activity

Grade Levels: You used this with Grades 3-5 and some of your students were gifted? I think it would also work well for 6 and 7th Graders too.

Subjects Covered: This project would cover Research Skills by discovering the origins of Sudoko, Math Skills and the use of Excel. Strong critical thinking skills will also be involved. The students would have to make sure that the number they leave in the grid would get their desired solutions.

Standards involved would include Nets: Creativity and Innovation as the students create their own puzzles. Communication and Collaboration would take place as the students collaborate with each other and share their puzzles. Research & Information Fluency is involved as the students research the history of Sudoku. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving and Decision Making are also involved in the creation and solving of the puzzles and finally, Technology Operations would take place through the use of the internet and Microsoft Excel.
